When using the Rule, you don’t have to use your willpower to think about making a decision. Instead, it’s a metacognition tool that pushes you into action before you even hesitate. When you couple the Rule with the other strategies listed above, you will find that it’s actually possible to follow through on every single goal that you have set for yourself. TO SUM IT ALL UP… Here’s a quick recap. 1. Think of your goal and have it at the forefront of your mind. 2. Write down your assumptions. What must hold true in order for you to actually achieve this goal? Where are you assuming that you will use willpower? 3. Then, in order to decrease the amount of willpower needed, figure out how you can use these strategies: 1. Pre-commitment: What can you sign up for or commit to RIGHT NOW that will keep you accountable? 2. Planning the night before: How can you leverage the power of Future You to set yourself up for success tomorrow? 3. Work on your goal first thing in the morning: What can you do, first thing in the morning, to work on your goal? 4. Use The 5 Second Rule: Don’t think. Don’t hesitate.
