HEALTH speaks to Sameera Ameer, owner of Wild Child Designz, a bespoke furniture design and interior design brand just for children about the top ways to create the ideal living space for your child. How did you venture into children’s design? Sameera While in unive rsity, we had many live projects where we had to design interiors for children. The process involved interacting and working with children, it is was then that I realized just how much I enjoyed designing for children as opposed to adults. And then when I had my own children, I discovered that I could not find furniture for their rooms that were unique, modern and sustainable but not the standard Ikea and Pottery Barn pieces. This led to the creation of Wild Child Designz. What are some key aspects that you look for when creating a unit for a child? Mar/Apr 2016 70 Sam eera Firstly, functionality, what is the piece going to be used for and what are the added requirements? Secondly, I look at the age of the child, as I would like my client to get as much use out of the piece as possible. Thirdly, the size of the space it will be used in has to be taken into consideration. And lastly, the aesthetics of the piece, would be determined by the general theme of the space it will be used in as well as by the interests of the child in mind. What specifically makes children’s furniture design different than conventional design? Sameera There is an element of fantasy and that appeals to me. I feel fantasy and imagination are necessary in such a self-destructive world. I like designing pieces that transport you to a different realm, a kind of happy peaceful place…
