Food Banks
in Cornwall
Food banks are becoming increasingly prevalent
due to rising food prices, changes to benefits, and
unemployment. In fact, over 900,000 people used food
banks in 2013, many of whom were elderly. However,
there is still a stigma attached to using a food bank,
even when people are no longer able to feed themselves
or their family. Here are some of the most frequently
asked questions about food banks in Cornwall.
What is a Food Bank?
Food banks are usually set up in places like
churches and community centres, and distribute
food to those who need it most. This food is often
donated by charities and other individuals, and
many people turn to food banks if they don't have
enough money for essential grocery items. There are
a number of reasons why elderly people may have
to use the services of a food bank. These include
debt problems, or an unexpected expense such as
a high utility bill. Other reasons include the rise in
the general cost of living, or part-time work hours
being cut. Many elderly people will need to use a
food bank this winter, especially as heating costs
have increased and it is becoming more expensive
to keep warm. However, a number of people refrain
from using food banks even when they are in dire
need - either out of shame or pride, or because they
are not sure whether they qualify.
