GENERAL SURGEONS SHARED TIP DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE AS A PATIENT! Make sure your physician is board-certified and get answers to all of your questions. An informed patient is the surgeon’s best ally. The internet is a fantastic resource when you want to learn more about your diagnosis … but be careful to use websites that can be trusted to provide accurate information. WebMD, Medscape, Mayo Clinic and many U.S. government-sponsored sites are excellent. RECOMMENDED Minimally-invasive surgery has even found an application in parathyroid surgery. Most patients have four parathyroid glands. If one of them is overactive, a patient can have high calcium levels, which results in a variety of symptoms as well as osteoporosis. By measuring a patient’s parathyroid hormone level throughout the surgery, we can avoid a full neck exploration and simply remove the single abnormal gland. This allows a smaller scar on the neck, avoids an overnight hospitalization and means a faster recovery for the patient. “We have made a commitment to serve the South Bay and provide excellent medical care, and that’s a promise we intend to keep!” PRACTICE SPECIALITY Surgical care has become increasingly specialized in the last 20 years. As such, there are subspecialties, many of which require board certification, within the field of general surgery: colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery, oncological surgery, hernia surgery and vascular surgery. Association of South Bay Surgeons is the most unique surgical group in Southern California because we have expert surgeons from all the above subspecialties gathered under one roof. Our goal is to attend to the full spectrum of surgical needs of the South Bay community with the highest level of care and expertise. Many of the surgeons in this group are innovators and educators in the field of surgery, with numerous publications in the surgical literature. Most recently, surgeons in this group have performed “ultra minimally-invasive surgery” and “single-incision surgery” (also known as “scar-less surgery”) for the first time in the South Bay. oursouthbay.com | 2013 Southbay Health? 85
