OFF THE CLOCK WITH DR. BORDEN
Dr. Borden grew up in the South Bay as the son of a local orthopaedic surgeon. His involvement in athletics at an early age included soccer, basketball, tennis, football, water polo, skiing and surfing. He eventually went on to play college basketball and water polo. Currently, Dr. Borden keeps himself in shape with running, weightlifting and biking. He enjoys heli-skiing and fly fishing and maintains a single-digit golf handicap. Dr. Borden’s true love of sports has carried on to his busy orthopaedic sports medicine practice, and he currently serves as the team physician for his alma mater, Chadwick High School in Palos Verdes.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON SPECIALIZING IN SPORTS MEDICINE?
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR STYLE AND TECHNIQUE?
“I was always interested in becoming a doctor like my father, after witnessing first-hand the satisfaction that he received from this profession. My interest in sports medicine is related to my own involvement in athletics, as well as my own experiences from suffering sports-related injuries.”
HOW DO YOU STAY ON TOP OF CURRENT TECHNOLOGY?
“I am actively involved in teaching other surgeons current concepts through lectures and performing surgical laboratory demonstrations. I also serve as a consultant to several major orthopaedic companies, with a focus on developing new surgical techniques, instruments and implants for the treatment of shoulder and knee injuries.”
WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALTY?
“I am very serious about patient care and the overall results for my patients. I treat my patients like I would like to be treated as if I were the patient. I am upfront with each patient about my opinions regarding the diagnosis, recommended treatment, importance of rehabilitation and importance of patient compliance at the initial meeting to ensure that the best result occurs in the shortest period of time. I believe that spending time in the office educating my patients yields a higher level of patient satisfaction and understanding of their injury, which ultimately results in better success rates.”
WHAT IS MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
“The ultimate satisfaction for me is positive feedback from my patients. The majority of my practice is based on patient-to-patient referrals. I truly enjoy returning athletes back to play, workers back to work, and all others back to their pre-injury status with 100% satisfaction.”
“I am a fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist who specializes in arthroscopic treatment of complex shoulder, knee and ankle injuries. I perform surgeries of the knee including ACL/PCL reconstructions, articular cartilage grafting and microfracture procedures, as well as meniscal repair and transplant procedures. Regarding the shoulder, I have had excellent success with a new technique that I have pioneered involving stem cell enhanced rotator cuff repairs, labral reconstructions, acromioclavicular ligament reconstructions and procedures related to problems with the biceps tendon. I also perform total shoulder replacements on a frequent basis. Common procedures that I perform for the ankle include ligament reconstructions for instability, arthroscopic cartilage procedures and removal of loose bodies.
PRACTICE SPECIALTY
Orthopedic sports medicine involves treatment of musculoskeletal injuries with the goal of achieving a full recovery in the shortest period of time. This can be accomplished through nonoperative or operative treatment, depending on the type and severity of the injury. Dr. Borden strongly believes that physical therapy and rehabilitation is an integral part of achieving a proper recovery for many injuries.
