Move over, soccer and softball. The South Bay high school athletic scene is heating up, with the addition of two new sports: girls’ beach volleyball and boys’ ice hockey. While both sports aren’t necessarily new to the area (more than a few professional beach volleyball and hockey players call the South Bay home), it’s only in the last few years that they’ve gained a steady following at local high schools. Back in 1972, Congress enacted Title IX of the Education Amendments, which prohibits discrimination based on gender in any educational program or activity that receives federal funding.
