medication or addiction you can address the need of the body to resolve stress and conditioned trauma.  NEED vs WANT The most intriguing and interesting two sides of the behaviour compass are those of WANT, which is what we believe we will be our best option at any moment, and NEED. Every action, every thought, symptom and emotion is a reaction to something, and it is a reaction intended to protect you in some way, to respond to a need of some kind, something you want to avoid or enjoy.  There are many different models that look to structure what the basic needs of a human is. They are all useful and fit into the base of the compass.  Two of the most common models of human needs are Maslows hierarchy of needs and the six human needs model of Cloe Madanes.  Maslow The pyramid of Maslow is fantastically useful in many ways. It has physical needs at the bottom such as breathing, food, water, sleep and excretion, which make a lot of sense (try not going to the toilet when you need to).  Next is a sense of security. Here we have left undeniable requirements of the biological vessel we live in and gone to perception of a situation, environment, company and time based on our earlier experiences and our beliefs about what is possible or not in this situation.  Belonging is about friendship, family and tribe.  Continuing to move into abstractions we find self esteem, respect for others and confidence on the next step.  At the top there is an intriguing mixture of morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving and acceptance.  It seems straightforward at first sight, and the fact that it is presented as a pyramid can make us believe that there is a foundation on which the rest stands. If you think about any first responder, like a fireman, they will disregard safety, rest, stress, lack of sleep and hydration (bottom) and still solve problems (top). So, it isn’t really hierarchical like a pyramid. It may be more helpful to regard as a pie chart where some components are of the type that you have no choice but to meet like breathing, and others more abstract.
