Of particular interest in this issue of HeadWise™ are articles from academia as well as a well-known
clinician in headache medicine. In February, 2013, I was honored by the caliber of the Seymour
Diamond, M.D. Lectureship, “Sex Differences in Migraine Brain.” The results of the research of
Nasim Maleki, PhD and her colleagues at Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital of
Boston have expanded our knowledge of a subject which I believe is intrinsic in the development of
migraine. The variances in the sex-related aspects of migraine and its manifestations will certainly
impact the treatment options for the disorder.
We know that 70 percent of migraineurs are female, and we are also aware, clinically, of the
different responses of men and women to treatment. The brain patterns described in Doctor
Maleki’s article may provide further insight into the management of migraine.
In this issue of HeadWise™, there is also an excellent review of migraine triggers by Edmund
Messina, MD. Doctor Messina’s thoughtful and concise review provides the reader a better
understanding of the various factors that can provoke a migraine and other types of headache.
Through this knowledge, the individual experiencing these headaches can avoid the triggers or know
how to manage the headache that is produced when the trigger is unavoidable. Even in headache
treatment, knowledge is a powerful tool for the physician and the patient.
