Alertacall transforms communication, engagement and safety at Abbeyfield Living Society
Alertacall is working with Abbeyfield Living Society to build digitally connected communities, where residents are safer, more informed and more engaged.
Abbeyfield provides sheltered housing, care homes and independent living for older people, with a focus on helping residents stay connected and enjoy a full life.
Independent living in a thriving community
Community is at the centre of everything Abbeyfield does, with regular activities including coffee mornings, days out and visits from local schools and community groups.
When Abbeyfield needed to upgrade existing warden call systems across 44 sheltered housing schemes, they turned to Alertacall’ s Beyond Warden Call ® service.
The society wanted to replace its analogue infrastructure with a modern, reliable solution, moving from a reactive model to proactive, two-way communication with residents.
The goal was not only to keep residents safe, but to ensure they feel informed, involved and part of a thriving community, while maintaining their independence without increasing unnecessary disruption or placing additional demands on staff.
A complete solution that’ s easy to use
Abbeyfield chose Alertacall’ s Housing Proactive ® service, combined with Beyond Warden Call ®, which includes digital telecare alarms and pendants, across an initial 25 schemes comprising more than 240 individual units.
A further 170 units were installed with video door entry systems, allowing residents to see visitors via the touchscreen before granting access, while also improving visibility for staff.
Around 400 more units are being installed, including smoke and heat detection linked to dispersed alarm units connected to an alarm receiving centre.
Installation began in March 2025 and is continuing across the remaining schemes.
“ The team at Alertacall understand what we are trying to achieve and share our priorities of providing a people-led service, which promotes community and connection in an environment that ensures their safety and respects their independence,” Francesca Wilson, Programme Manager.
Designed to maximise engagement
Housing Proactive ® is delivered via a portable digital touchscreen, enabling instant updates on services, events and safety information. Residents can also report repairs, provide feedback and complete surveys, including Tenant Satisfaction Measures.
The service includes Alertacall’ s OKEachDay ® for Housing, providing regular contact through Remote Housing Officers.
The touchscreens are designed for older residents, with large buttons, and the option for recording voice messages to send to housing teams. They use multi-network SIM cards, with WiFi available where suitable, ensuring reliable connectivity.
Alertacall worked with Abbeyfield to introduce the service to residents and provide training to staff.
Over 75 % of residents using OKEachDay ® for Housing have engaged with it every day.
“ The biggest impact from my perspective has been on communication and resident engagement, giving people a simple way to stay informed, share their views, and feel more connected day-to-day,” Justin O ' Brien, Resident Engagement Manager.
Abbeyfield uses the touchscreen to share information about meetings, coffee mornings, events and important updates. Through the Alertacall Portal, staff can monitor resident engagement, helping identify changing needs earlier. Residents also enjoy using the touchscreen to call and chat with one another.
As the rollout continues, Abbeyfield is embedding the technology into everyday life, expanding surveys and feedback, strengthening communication between residents and staff, and using insights from the Alertacall Portal to provide more responsive, personalised support.
“ What makes Alertacall such a great fit for Abbeyfield Living Society is how they blend smart technology with real human contact. It complements our focus on creating safe, happy and comfortable communities. We ' re grateful to Homes England for its support through the Recycled Capital Grant Fund, which made this programme and our partnership with Alertacall possible. As we continue to work together, I believe we ' ll see even greater benefits for our teams and, most importantly, our residents.” Paul Tennant, CEO.
