On October 2-3, 2017, the first-ever Florida LGBTQ Legal Aid Summit was held in Fort Lauderdale. Sponsored by The Florida Bar Foundation, and presented by Legal Aid Service of Broward County and Legal Services of North Florida, this statewide summit brought together legal aid programs, community organizations
( including representatives from the HCBA’ s Diversity Committee), and advocates from around Florida. The Summit’ s focus was on educating attendees about legal issues faced by the LGBTQ community, showcasing LGBTQ advocates and service providers in and outside of Florida, and furthering collaboration among organizations and advocates to identify and address the LGBTQ community’ s systemic issues and statewide needs.
The Summit began with a training session to increase attendees’ cultural competency. This training included an overview of basic concepts and terms used within the LGBTQ community, as
