Meet the Judges: Judge

there is always more than meets the eye,
or ear, as stories would have it. this is
particularly true with Judge isom.
On November 16, 2017, just one day after this article was
submitted for publication, Judge Claudia Isom was in a serious
car accident. When I asked Judge Isom to be my next “Meet the
Judges” subject, she was honored, excited, and enthusiastic —
it was her delight at being featured and her enthusiasm for
sharing more of her personal and professional life with the Bar
led me to the decision to send the following article, in its original
format, to print. In addition to giving each of you the insight she
desired to share, I hope it brings Judge Isom joy during this
challenging time. I am pleased that reports on Judge Isom’s
health and recovery are favorable. Please join me in continuing
to pray for her full recovery. I know we all look forward to her
returning to the bench soon.

n the May-June 2017 edition of the Lawyer
magazine, I introduced the first “Meet the Judges”
column, which featured Judge Rex Barbas. At that
time, I invited you to keep an eye out for upcoming
features. In this second segment of our recurring
series on Thirteenth Circuit judges, I present to you Judge
Claudia Rickert Isom.
With people, there is always more than meets the eye.
This is particularly true when it comes to Judge Isom. She
is certainly one of the more accessible jurists. But despite

her Rolodex of activities and the personal connections she
has with many of you, I would wager there is something
in here you don’t know about her. Like why she has an
affinity for bears, why she wanted to become a lawyer, or
why, in many ways, she compares herself to Maria von
Trapp. She’s accessible, yet slightly mysterious. You want
to learn more.
