about the Cover
On the cover of this issue of the magazine, we are continuing with our theme of connections by highlighting one of the more colorful, historic and unique connectors in our region— the TECO Streetcar. The TECO Line Streetcar is a 2.7-mile fixed-guideway transit system that connects downtown Tampa, the Channel District, and the historic Ybor City neighborhood. Managed by a partnership between the City of Tampa and the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority( HART), the streetcar functions as both a nostalgic nod to Tampa’ s past and an active transit choice for commuters, residents, and tourists alike. The first electric streetcars opened in Tampa in 1892 and ranged from downtown to Ballast Point to West Tampa. At its high point, about 24 million passengers rode the streetcars annually. Shut down in 1946, the Streetcars started rolling again in Tampa in 2002. Learn more about this unique part of Tampa history at: https:// www. tecolinestreetcar. org /. Photo credit: Stephaun Martin.
