When you walk into a new place, a new role, or a new organization, you hope that you find your reason for belonging. The HCBA YLD is no different. When every new attorney passes the bar and joins our legal community, we want them to find a place to connect. With over 700 young lawyers in our organization alone, finding your people and your place can be hard. The YLD Board consists of young lawyers in different areas of practice and perspective, and with connection in mind, our board has started the year strong to bridge the gap for those new and returning.
To begin the year, the HCBA YLD hosted our annual committee training, which brought together YLD members who wanted to become more involved in the organization and our community. This year, I’ m excited that more than 50 young lawyers have stepped forward to become actively involved with the YLD and its committees. They represent different backgrounds, but they share a common goal: becoming more connected to their profession, their community, and one another. We discussed ways to improve and connect, but most
importantly, to grow. Beyond learning about committee responsibilities and upcoming initiatives, the event gave members an opportunity to meet fellow young lawyers, exchange ideas, and begin relationships that will continue throughout the year. These relationships benefit you as an attorney, but more importantly, give you a community and a network.
While our committees are responsible for everything from member services and professional development to community outreach and social programming, their greatest impact may be the relationships formed while doing that work. The relationships you make when striving toward a goal become unbreakable the more you work together.
I encourage every young lawyer to become involved, join a committee, and make those connections. You never know when a new connection can change your trajectory. I’ m proud of those who have chosen to become involved this year and am so excited to work together to make the HCBA YLD a place where people find connection. n
The YlD hosted a Chair & Committee Training for its new leadership on August 14th at the Chester Ferguson law Center.
