Welcome back to a new bar year! Before we discuss the future, we’ d like to take a moment to recap the past year.
Our first program focused on originalism. Our panelists included Kevin Golembiewski( then at the Florida Solicitor General’ s Office), Professor Louis J. Virelli III( Stetson Law), and Kristin R. Moore and Angelina M. Vigliotti( both at the Stetson Law Library). One of us( Ali) moderated. We covered everything from the basics of originalism to research strategies for finding historical materials.
Our second program focused on appellate motion practice. Tom Elligett and Amy Farrior( both at Buell Elligett Farrior &
Faircloth, P. A.) presented, keeping things entertaining by featuring clips from famous movies and music videos. Judge Edward LaRose also participated, offering his insights from the bench.
Our third program was the annual Breakfast with the Second District Court of Appeal. Chief Judge Matthew Lucas gave the state of the district. Clerk Mary Beth Kuenzel and Director of Central Staff Austin Roe answered questions about the state and operations of the clerk’ s office and central staff. And we discussed the pros and cons of per curiam affirmances with Suzanne Bechard( formerly at the Florida Attorney General’ s Office), Chris Altenbernd( Banker Lopez Gassler), and Adam Richardson( Burlington & Rockenbach). We( Dimitri and Ali) moderated.
Our fourth program was on drafting trial court orders, featuring Second District Judge Nelly Khouzam, Thirteenth Circuit Judges Logan Murphy( moderator) and Darren Farfante, and Brandon Breslow( Kynes Markman Felman).
As a bonus program, we coordinated with Judge Suzanne Labrit and Plant High School teacher Tamara Phillips to have 15 high school students attend an oral argument before the Second District in Tampa at the Edgecomb courthouse. Prior to the arguments, we hosted coffee and pastries at the courthouse for the students and local lawyers.
We also submitted an article to all six issues of Lawyer magazine. Our authors included Ali Preston
