One of the most revealing questions we can ask public employees is also one of the simplest: Why do you love your job?
When the Hillsborough County Clerk’ s Office conducted its most recent employee engagement survey, the answers were strikingly consistent among the 530 respondents. Employees did not underscore salaries, schedules, or perks. They talked about purpose.
One employee wrote,“ I am provided the opportunity to use my skills and passion to make a difference each day.” Another responded,“ We have lots of different opportunities to help our constituents in many different ways.”
These responses matter because public service is, at its core, people helping people. A customer may have only one brief interaction with us, but the quality of that experience inevitably reflects the culture of the workplace. Behind every effective public agency is a work ecosystem that attracts service minded employees and provides strong reasons for them to stay.
Eighty-one percent of employees in our survey said their work feels meaningful— a core driver of a healthy organization. Purpose can’ t be created through slogans; employees need to know their work matters, their
