This response creates an internal sense of obligation to reciprocate, often motivating the recipient to make a favorable offer in return. Conversely, an unreasonable offer usually stimulates negative emotions which compels the receiving party to retaliate with an undesirable counter-offer. Effective trial lawyers and mediators carefully consider the psychological“ boomerang effect” of their words and actions during mediation. n
