On the cover of this issue, we continue our walk down memory lane in local military history. MacDill Air Force Base in south Tampa was identified as a suitable airfield site by US Army aviators in 1938. Originally called Southeast Air Base, it was renamed MacDill Field after Col. Leslie MacDill and formally dedicated on April 16, 1941. The base began training B-17( Flying Fortress) and B-26( Martin Marauder) bomber crews during World War II and was the home of the Third Bomber Command, the largest heavy bombardment command in the Southeast. Operational Training Units turned out thousands of highly trained pilots, gunners, engineers, mechanics, radio operators, navigators and bombardiers. The top photo, taken in March 1942 by Frank Scherschel for Life magazine, shows USAAF personnel training with a Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress at MacDill Field.
