On the cover of our magazine for this issue, we are highlighting a famous historical military campaign that is a big part of local history. Tampa played a crucial role in the history of The Rough Riders( First U. S. Volunteer Cavalry) during the 1898 Spanish-American War, serving as the vital staging ground where Colonel Theodore Roosevelt’ s diverse regiment assembled, trained, and embarked for Cuba, leaving behind a lasting legacy commemorated today by local groups like the Tampa Rough Riders, who maintain monuments and history in areas like Vila Brothers Park and near the old Tampa Bay Hotel( University of Tampa). The photos on the cover show Col. Roosevelt during their encampment in Tampa, and Rough Rider soldiers in front of the old Tampa Bay Hotel.
