In a span of just 13 days this fall , the Tampa Bay region and Florida got punched in the mouth — twice .
On Sept . 26 , Hurricane Helene , a powerful Category 3 storm with winds reaching 120 mph , made landfall near Perry in Florida ’ s Big Bend region .
Although Helene passed more than 100 miles offshore in the Gulf , the Tampa Bay area still experienced a record 7.2 feet of storm surge , resulting in severe flooding , widespread power outages , and residential damage estimated at over $ 1.8 billion in Hillsborough County alone .
Then , less than two weeks later , on Oct . 9 , Hurricane Milton , another Category 3 storm , struck near Siesta Key .

Milton ’ s monster winds blew the roof off the dome at Tropicana Field in St . Petersburg .
