about the Cover
On the cover of this issue , we are continuing to highlight famous athletes with local connections , featuring a favorite local son , Lee Roy Selmon . Selmon is regarded as one of the greatest players in the Tampa Bay Buccaneer ’ s history , playing for the team from 1977-1984 , and was the first Tampa Bay player selected to the National Football Hall of Fame . He also was named the NFL ’ s Defensive Player of the Year in 1979 and was the first player named to the team ' s Ring of Honor in 2009 . Before joining the Bucs , Selmon followed his brothers in playing on the defensive line at the University of Oklahoma . He helped the Sooners win the National Championship in 1974 and 1975 , and won the Lombardi Award for Best College Linebacker and the Outland Trophy for the Best Interior Lineman .
After retiring from the Bucs , Selmon stayed in Tampa , working as a bank executive and was active in many charities . He also served as the Athletic Director at the University of South Florida , where he launched the football program , spearheaded the construction of a new athletic facility , and led the university ’ s move into Conference USA , and into the Big East Conference . He also helped co-found the popular Lee Roy Selmon ’ s restaurant chain in 2000 , which was a favorite of the community . After his untimely death in 2011 , the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway was named in his honor in 2016 . ( Photos courtesy of Oklahoma Historical Society and Tampa Bay Buccaneers )
