If you ’ re a member of the HCBA YLD , you most certainly have vivid memories of awkwardly dancing at a middle school dance , which was never complete until the night ended with Semisonic ’ s “ Closing Time .” As I began to think about the end of 2021 , it seemed like another year that many are eager to leave behind . But as closing time comes for 2021 , it ’ s important to reflect upon the past year and the many truly good things 2021 brought , particularly related to the HCBA YLD . While 2021 still wasn ’ t quite “ normal ,” the HCBA YLD worked hard to provide its members a better than normal experience .
At the Voluntary Bar Leadership Conference , affiliate leaders were challenged with “ cleaning out the closet ” by ensuring programming is still relevant and meaningful . The HCBA YLD took this to heart this year . From new events , happy hours , the golf tournament , pro bono luncheon , Coffee with a Cause , and monthly charitable initiatives , the HCBA YLD has been tremendously busy .
As part of the YLD ’ s inclusivity efforts , we have focused on diversifying the size and activity types we offer . In October , we hosted a small group event at Leafy Luv Affair , a local plant shop . Attendees learned the basics of how to choose the right plants for their workspace and how to take care of their new “ plant babies .” Attendees were given the opportunity to relax , network , and they even got to take home a new plant baby to “ greenify ” their office spaces .
Also in October , the YLD hosted a family-and-dog friendly fun run / walk for members to participate in Miles for Justice benefitting Bay Area Legal Services . Attendees wore Halloween costumes and took to the Tampa River Walk . The YLD won “ the largest group walk ” and one of our YLD members was awarded “ most miles ” ran / walked .
