Diversity Membership Luncheon in January, where speakers such as
Sherry D. Williams and Adam J. Foss have been invited to speak. Ms.
Williams is a former vice president, deputy general counsel, and global
chief ethics & compliance officer for Jabil, Inc. and Mr. Foss is a former
assistant district attorney from Boston, Massachusetts, and advocate for
criminal justice reform. The Diversity & Inclusion Committee wants to
continue in this positive trajectory by inviting volunteers to help with
planning next year’s luncheon.
A second event we look forward to is the Diversity and Inclusion
Networking Social. This event aims to foster professional relationships
between Florida law students and HCBA members. Typically, the
Diversity and Inclusion Networking Social takes place at the Chester H.
Ferguson Law Center. At the event, law firms and organizations set up
information tables and connect with law students. A third event that the
Diversity Committee hosts is the annual Diversity Lunch and Learn CLE.
This event provides HCBA members with the opportunity to obtain a
two-hour Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit. Former topics
discussed at the CLE courses include generational diversity among Baby
Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials, and ways to enhance
communication across dimensions of difference.
While it may be too early to predict which of these events will take
place in person and which will be in a virtual setting, we encourage
members and law firms alike to look for ways to get involved. For those
interested in joining the Diversity Committee, we invite you to sign up
through the HCBA’s website and join our monthly meetings; there you
will have the opportunity to help plan events, contribute to important
conversations, and write quarterly articles. Though 2020 has brought
new challenges, you can still make a positive contribution for the
upcoming year.
