TV Shows Under The Radar
Tucked away during the graveyard hours of television
programming, WDAU (22) is showing “Republic of Doyle” at 2
a.m. on Sunday mornings. It just happens to be one of the most
entertaining shows now airing on television.
“Republic of Doyle” is a Canadian comedy-drama series set
in Newfoundland. It made its debut on January 6, 2010 on CBC
Television. The show is the extremely creative brainchild of
Allen Hawco, who stars, writes, and executive produces as well.
The series stars Hawco and Sean McGinley as father and
son private investigating partners who concentrate on cases in
St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Labrador. Their investigations
involve them in a wide array of legal situations on both the right
and the wrong side of the law.
What sets “Republic of Doyle” apart from other shows is its
originality of setting, story, characters, and pacing. Hawco and
his show’s co-creators, Malcom MacRury and Perry Chafe have
outdone themselves with plot creativity and strong continuing
character development in every episode.
Jake Doyle (Hawco) is a thirty year old man who lives with
his father Malachy because his ex-wife has kicked him out. He
is a private investigator working with his father, Mal, and his
father’s wife, Rose.
Malachy Doyle, frequently referred to as Mal, or Skippy,
or Poppy, serves as partner in Doyle and Doyle (their business
partnership).
In addition to the two main characters, there are six
secondary roles as well as occasional guest appearances.
