An exciting field trip to Nepal part of the
Mountain Hazards Module for undergraduate
students in the Department of Geography at
Durham University, studied the science of
geohazards such as earthquakes, landslides,
floods and debris flows that frequently occur
in this amazingly beautiful mountainous
region. Learning about landslide mechanics,
river dynamics and new techniques in remote
sensing and field data capture, students
led their own group research projects which
were presented later at a conference in
Durham. They also looked at the impact a
large magnitude earthquake in the city of
Kathmandu could have on the lives of the
people living there. These photos from the
field trip capture well some of the hazards
they learned about and the communities
vulnerable to them.
