a day in the life of...
Nicholas Noel // Director of the Richmond Players
latest production, Oklahoma!
By Penny Webb
dad moved to Windsor Downs ten
years to start raising lowline cattle.
He fell in love with the area and
discovered The Richmond Players,
where he exercises his creativity
most recently as the Director of
Oklahoma.
Nicholas is a busy dad to 18
month old William and husband
to wife, Samantha. From Penrith,
he got to know the Hawkesbury
a little better when his mum and
0600 Early start. I get Will up and
watch some high quality children’s
television! Personally I love Ben &
Holly’s Little Kingdom
the crew. Start herding the cast
into getting ready themselves,
followed by a singing warm up with
the musical director and cast.
0700 First cup of coffee for the day - my
own concoction of caramel latte
and Milo – and family breakfast
time
1300 Make sure the cast are getting
ready (again - it’s like herding cats),
place props backstage and check
in with individual cast members
to discuss certain notes or issues
from the previous show.
0800 Shower, shave and get dressed. I
make sure to bring one outfit for
getting the stage ready and one for
wearing at shows. Need to come
across as vaguely professional
looking!
0900 Start getting things ready for the
musical, including checking props
are together, organising notebook
and libretto.
1000 Pack the car, say goodbye to
Will and Sam and head out to
Richmond School Of Arts.
1100 Arrive at Richmond, and firstly
wander around the local fresh
market – get a coffee, check the
delicious fruit and veg, then buy
some jerky or something sweet!
A bit too on edge to eat a proper
lunch.
1200 Open the hall, set the stage and
discuss any technical issues with
1400 Matinee begins! Sit back and
breathe a sigh of relief and watch
this absolutely smashing cast put
on a cracker of a show.
1500 Wander around backstage in the
intermission and discuss any
action points from the first half of
the show. I give them a little gee
up and get the energy building.
Covertly listen in on patrons
discussing aspects of the show.
1600 The Second Act begins and I
breathe a second sigh of relief and
enjoy the show
1700 Matinee finishes up so I chat
through the show with some of the
interested people who thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. Congratulate
the cast on a great show and send
them off to eat dinner.
This month, Nicholas gives us a
snapshot into what his day is like in
the middle of a busy performance
schedule on show day. Break a leg!
“I love the feeling of solitude you
can engender even just by driving
into the Hawkesbury.”

1800 Wander off to eat somewhere local
– Italian, Thai, pub bistro – it’s all
delicious!
how the show is going, then watch
the remainder of Act 2 by peeking
through a side door!
1900 Evening show starts! Get everyone
fired up for another great show. Not
get a seat to see it myself because
there’s too many people. Climb up
into the tech box and help work the
sound/microphones
2200 Show finishes for the evening. I
tidy up the stage, clear up the
hall, lights out and lock up. Chat
to people and discuss some of
the finer details of the show with
interested people
2000 Another smashing show ! I wander
around the audience at intermission
and chat to people I know who
recognise me from the program.
Visit the cast out the back and
congratulate
them on the
energy! It’s
tough to keep
that energy
going for two
shows.
2300 Finally leave! Drive home, poke my
nose in on Will and try not to wake
him up. Crash out in bed after a
HUGE day.

Act begins.
