There are few pleasures more charming than an evening spent beneath the gentle glow of lantern light, and this year’ s Gas Lamp Festival in Windsor promises just such an enchantment. Nestled along the river and steeped in history, the old town offers the perfect stage for a celebration that recalls a simpler, more gracious age- yet with all the warmth and conviviality of a modern gathering.
Festivities commence on Friday evening with Canapés Under The Stars, a most civilised affair where friends, neighbours, and curious visitors alike may gather to enjoy fine bites and good company. As twilight deepens and the lamps begin to flicker to life, Windsor takes on an almost storybook quality, an atmosphere that invites lingering conversation and quiet admiration.
Saturday brings the full flourish of the festival, beginning with a delightful array of attractions to amuse visitors of all ages. From 2.30pm, horse and carriage rides will clip-clop through the historic streets, offering a leisurely way to take in the town’ s heritage façades and leafy surrounds. It is a rare pleasure to travel as our forebears once did, even if only for an afternoon.
From 3pm, the streets will come alive with unique markets, where artisans
and traders present their wares; and crafted goods, curiosities, and treats that speak to both tradition and creativity. It is the sort of place where one might stumble upon a treasure quite by chance.
A particular highlight is the festival parade, a lively procession that welcomes participation from all. Visitors are warmly encouraged to don their finest colonial-inspired attire and join in the spectacle.
Whether you favour bonnets and waistcoats or simply a hint of vintage flair, the spirit of the occasion lies in embracing the past with a touch of whimsy.
