LIVING ON THE LAND

Farming for the future forum

Landholders across Sydney’ s northwest are being invited to tap into new income streams and future-proof their farms at an upcoming forum focused on natural capital and sustainable agriculture.
Hosted by Greater Sydney Local Land Services, the one-day event, Farming on the Fringe: Healthy Landscapes, Food and Communities, will take place on Friday, May 15 at Hawkesbury Race Club. The forum will bring together farmers, land managers, industry experts and community organisations to explore the evolving opportunities shaping agriculture on Sydney’ s urban fringe.
Sustainable Agricultural Facilitator Richard Stephens said the event is designed to give landholders practical tools to boost productivity while improving the environmental value of their land.
“ This forum is a great opportunity for landholders to explore proven techniques to enhance profitability by investing in natural capital,” he said.
Participants will gain insights into carbon farming, biodiversity markets and other emerging environmental opportunities, alongside practical strategies for soil and pasture management, riparian rehabilitation and water use.
The event features an impressive lineup of speakers, including regenerative farmer and Farm Thru co-founder Rachel Ward, and Robert Pekin, co-founder and CEO of Food Connect Shed. The day will be hosted by respected journalist and broadcaster Chris Bath, who is also a sustainable small farmer and beekeeper. Attendees will also hear directly from local landholders who are already adopting innovative approaches to land management, sharing their experiences of improving productivity while enhancing environmental outcomes.
A range of natural capital experts will present throughout the day, alongside panel discussions and a Landcare session. A mini trade show will showcase products and services across soil health, carbon farming, biodiversity, regenerative agriculture and direct-to-consumer produce sales.
The forum is tailored to a wide audience, from small-scale lifestyle block owners through to larger farming operations and agribusiness representatives, with strong networking opportunities available throughout the day.
Registration is now open, with tickets priced at $ 50 for general admission or $ 75 for couples. The ticket includes a gourmet lunch as well as morning and afternoon tea.
With places limited and strong interest expected, organisers are encouraging early registration. Attendees can also reduce travel costs by taking advantage of Clarendon Railway Station, located adjacent to the Hawkesbury Race Club.
The event is delivered by Local Land Services in partnership with the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water under the Primary Industries Productivity and Abatement Program.
