IN MEMORIUM

Vale Maryann

Callaghan

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of one of our wonderful writers, and former Editor, Maryann“ MJ” Callaghan.
MJ, as she was affectionately known to us at The Independent, was part of our publishing family and will be deeply missed by us all.
In the early hours of 19 February, just after 2.30am, Maryann passed away in the palliative care ward of St Vincent’ s Hospital, surrounded by care and compassion.
Since December 1, she had been bravely fighting what was later diagnosed as a very rare and aggressive autoimmune condition affecting her heart. True to her nature, she faced her illness with extraordinary determination and strength, right through to her final moments. MJ truly had a heart of gold. She loved to write and had a special gift for telling the stories of the Hawkesbury. Her deep affection for the community shone through in every article she penned. She understood the people, the history and the quiet beauty of the region, and she treated every story with respect and care. Through
her words, she celebrated local lives and moments that mattered.
She was a talented writer, but more importantly, a kind and generous soul. MJ was devoted to her family, speaking often and proudly of those she loved, especially her beloved son, Bradley. Her love for him was unwavering and evident to anyone who spent time with her.
To lose someone so vibrant and compassionate at just 55 is heartbreaking. Her warmth, her gentle spirit and her unmistakable voice will remain part of our pages and our memories forever.

So young, with laughter in her eyes, A tender heart, so brave and wise. She wrote of life with loving grace, And left her light in every place. Though far too soon she’ s gone from view, Her words remain, forever true.
