LOCAL LIFE
ONE OF THE HAWKESBURY’ S FINEST...

My favourite subject at school was history and I, like all boys, loved studying the successful leaders in battle.
Battle-hardened leaders such as Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Horatio Nelson, Duke of Wellington and our very own Sir John Monash, Harry Chauvel, Matron Grace Wilson and Vivian Bullwinkel.
Sure, they were brave, but it was their leadership skills which inspired their followers to succeed in their endeavours.
It was your writer’ s pleasure to cross paths last month with another inspirational leader – not on the battlefield but in the classroom- when I tagged along to the reunion of former Richmond High alumni.
The occasion was the reunion of the schools’ first induction of students to the new Wyndham Scheme back in 1962, I was a“ ringin” at the invitation of reunion organiser, Paul Wayling.
I was reluctant to attend but Paul told me that it would give me the opportunity to meet the school’ s principal of whom he had been informed was“ an
inspirational” figure.
When I was a kid, I always looked forward to Saturday mornings when I parked myself in front of the TV to watch the inimitable Professor Julius Sumner Miller’ s science show, Why Is It So. – mindboggling!
And to quote the inimitable professor,“ What we do, if we are successful, is to stir interest in the matter at hand, awaken enthusiasm for it, arouse a curiosity, kindle a feeling, fire up the imagination.”
Hayley Macdonald wasn’ t down the back of the class when the professor was spruiking his words of wisdom!
Hayley has been at the helm at Richmond High since October 2024, when she relocated from her position as principal of Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus in Newcastle.
During an interview in the 1940s, Professor Sumner Miller stated that intellectual life in America was in trouble, a belief he held for the rest of his life.
“ We are approaching a darkness in the land,” he said.
“ Boys and girls are emerging from every level of school with certificates and degrees, but they can’ t read, write or calculate.
