ONE OF THE HAWKESBURY’ S FINEST...

by Greg Martin
It seems that those successful musicians with“ doctor” prefixing their names wouldn’ t know a carbuncle from cancer!
Well, there’ s Doctor Hook, Dr John, Spin Doctors, Doctor and the Medics, Dr Alban,
The Saw Doctors and Doctor Feelgood.
Dr Phil Hungerford’ s success in music wouldn’ t match those luminaries but on the plus side, if a member of the audience suffers a medical trauma, he’ s the man you want to put down his guitar and tend you.
Dr Phil Hungerford imparting his vast knowledge in Emergency Medicine to staff at a hospital in Papua New Guinea.
Phil would agree( albeit reluctantly) that his success as a musician can’ t match the other doctors’ careers, but he leaves them for dead at the medical caper!
( Not that the good doctor would leave anyone for dead. I think I might have over explained that!).
During his 44 years as a highly respected physician, Phil has established a much-vaunted career, especially in the area of Emergency Medicine.
Such has been his contribution to society as a doctor, mentor and teacher, Phil was the proud recipient of a Medal of the Order of Australia( OAM) on Australia Day, 2023.
Just have a gander at this remarkable man’ s contribution to, not only his fellow Australians, but to nations scattered throughout the Pacific region.
He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine with which body he has been a member for 34 years, and a dedicated supporter of Skills and Training Institute in Health’ s scheme of sending Australian and international doctors to develop Emergency Medicine throughout the Pacific and Asia.
“ I have been privileged to have participated in teaching courses in New Guinea, Myanmar, the Solomon Islands, East Timor, Fiji and Samoa,” Phil said.
“ Our aim is to not only impart our Emergency Life Support( ELS) knowledge to our students but, just as importantly, teach them how to teach.”
“ We achieved our two principal aims: to introduce a standardised approach to stabilising and managing seriously ill medical patients to the future leaders of emergency medicine, and then to have those future leaders take ownership of the ELS course in their country and continue
