As the chill of winter begins to settle over the historic town of Windsor, there’ s a warmth that radiates through its brick streets and colonial architecture. It’ s a warmth that harkens back to a bygone era, when gas lamps flickered in the night casting a romantic glow over the town’ s bustling thoroughfares. And it’ s this nostalgic charm that the Windsor Gas Lamp Festival aims to celebrate this year.
Over the long weekend from 3- 6 October 2025, Windsor will come alive with the enchanting glow of its restored gas lamps, marking the largest network of such lamps in Australia. With 25 of the original 26 lamp posts still standing tall, it’ s a testament to Windsor’ s rich heritage and enduring spirit.
Originally installed by the Australian Gas Light Company( AGL) during the building of the mall 40 years ago, the lamps aimed to replicate those from 100 years prior. These handcrafted lamps have been an integral part of Windsor’ s landscape since 1884. Crafted in the traditional Windsor style by William Sugg & Co, the gas lamps not only illuminate the town but also serve as a beacon of history and craftsmanship.
The Windsor Gas Lamp Festival is a celebration of this heritage, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the charm of yesteryear. From night markets and food stalls, there’ s something for everyone to enjoy.
The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the official ceremony on Saturday evening, kicking off with a grand parade through the town’ s historic streets. Led by a full Bag Pipe Band and the iconic Gasketeers’ the parade promises to be a spectacle like no other. period costumes, the town’ s exhibits further transport visitors back in time.
Bands and live entertainment will be in the rotunda; the air will be filled with music late into the night.
For those with a competitive spirit, the town lighting competition offers a chance for residents to showcase creativity and flair with judging by none other than our councillors.
