This coming October long weekend, our historic town of Windsor will once more celebrate being bathed in the amber light of her famous network of gas lamps, the largest in the southern hemisphere, as the annual Gas Lamp Festival unfolds.
Festivities begin on Friday evening, 3 October, with Canapés Under the Gas Lamps. For $ 50 a head, townsfolk and visitors alike may stroll the gas lit streets, tasting delicate morsels and temperance drinks, while the soft flicker of the lamps whisper stories of yesteryear.
On Saturday 4 October, the night markets will open at 4pm, their stalls spilling colour and fragrance into the cool spring air. Music will fill the rotunda and, at 5pm, the parade will set forth from Thompson Square- bagpipers skirling, the proud“ Gasketeers” marching in their finery. Prizes await the
best-dressed in the community, for in Windsor tradition is worn with pride.
Sunday 5 October brings the Windsor Mall Sunday Market to the Mall, a cheerful hub of goods, crafts, and conversation.
The merriment draws to a close on Monday 6 October with Children’ s Day in Hollands Paddock from 10am to 3pm. There, young folk will find food trucks, face painting, craft, games, and laughter enough to fill the paddock and spill into memory.
The Windsor Gas Lamp Festival is not merely a programme of events – it is the living heart of a town that honours its past while welcoming all to share in its historic light.
