LIFE & STYLE

Museum preserves history of printing

by Greg Martin
Two“ Princes of Printing” in the Hawkesbury have combined forces to ensure the former age of printing isn’ t erased from history.
Bob Lockley and John“ Wild Red” are respectively the president and vice-president of the Penrith Museum of Printing which is based in the Penrith Paceway complex.
Your writer is old enough to have experienced hot-metal typesetting on linotypes and compositors setting pages, but not so our ace photographer, Kathryn Johnston.
“ This is truly amazing,” Kath said as she careered around the museum taking snaps of just about every machine on display.
It was my first visit to the museum after crossing paths with“ Wild Red” – nicknamed after the famous American champion wrestler – and asked him“ what are you up to?”.“ Five foot, six inches,” he quipped. This comedian then told me of his involvement in the Print Museum, and, always on the lookout for a good yarn, next day, Kath and I headed to Penrith where we were given a guided tour of the place by Bob, John and the museum’ s secretary, Steve Boyd.
Bob was Hawkesbury Newspaper print manager until retiring in 2017, wrapping up his 33-year career with the company by bowing out as
with Hawkesbury City Mayor Les Sheather
You would be surprised at just how much work goes into running a city the size of the Hawkesbury and the rich diversity of projects, programs and responsibilities Council staff work on each day. We are also blessed to have an amazing network of community partners working alongside us to help make the Hawkesbury such a great place to live, play and do business. On Sunday 3 August you are invited to celebrate our community with us at Hawkesbury Fest on the banks of the river at Governor Phillip Park. There will be market stalls,
Fairfax Media’ s group director, print and distribution.
Bob developed into one of the most influential print executives in the country after beginning his working life as a compositor at Cumberland Newspapers in Parramatta.
John Berry kicked off his work life on April 5, 1965, snaring a job as a compositor and linotype operator, and remained with Rural Press throughout it morphing into other companies until retiring in 2016 as a long-time foreman.
The museum houses a huge array of machines involved in the printing industry including five types of linotypes, depicting the changes in what they could produce over a series of decades from 1906.
Not to mention – OK, I will- ludlows( which set headings), and two vintage cylinder presses- an 1880 Wharfedale and 1936 Heidelberg.“ We have many machines in storage which, of course we would like to place on display, it is a case of
‘ house full’ at our current premises,” Bob said.
On that note, Bob asked if I could place in the story that if anyone in the Penrith area has such a venue to be leased, to make contact on 0408 412 708, or email pmop @ printingmuseum. org. au“ l’ lI see about,” I replied. The museum is open to the public on Sundays between 10am-2pm, or you can get together a group and book a tour – group tours operate every day except Wednesday.
The costs of experiencing a part of history dear to all who can read are, adults $ 15, children free, while tour costs are $ 15 and $ 10 for seniors.
Not only do visitors inspect the machinery but staff also show how the equipment is operated.
Bob Lockley( l), Steve Boyd and John Berry( r) are passionate about preserving the history of printing in Australia in the 20 th Century. They posed for the birdie in front of an 89-year-old Heidelberger cylinder press. Photo: Kathryn Johnston.

FROM THE MAYOR’ S DESK

community and emergency services displays, food trucks, live and roaming entertainment, carnival rides and more! Join us between 10am and 3pm for a FREE, fun, family day out and discover how your Council is always working to make your city great. The revitilsation works in the much loved Windsor Mall are nearly complete with new pavers, gardens and street furniture, which will be installed soon. There’ s just a little bit of tidy up work to go until it is officially opened and I encourage everyone to check it out for themselves right now and support all the wonderful businesses in Windsor.
I am also pleased to have been able to break ground with fellow councillors at Fernadell Park in Pitt Town. Over the coming months, a new hub for sporting and community life will emerge from the empty fields to provide muchneeded recreation space in the growing Pitt Town community.
Our annual Chemical CleanOut is back this August. Make a plan to get rid of unwanted household chemicals like paints, motor oils, household cleaners and car batteries for FREE at Hawkesbury Showground on Sunday 17 August from 9am to 3.30pm.
Disposing of these chemicals the right way is great for the environment – check cleanout. com. au for a full list of accepted waste and chemicals.
