Strong uptake of rebates for reusable nappies

Hawkesbury City Council’ s rebate scheme, launched in November 2024, supports households that purchase reusable nappies, reusable sanitary products, rechargeable batteries, and chargers.
To date, the majority of applications have been for rebates on cloth nappies. Under the scheme, households can claim 50 % of the cost of cloth nappies, swim nappies, reusable nappy liners, wet bags, reusable wipes associated with cloth nappies, and reusable nursing pads, up to a maximum of $ 100 per household.
In addition, households may claim 50 % of the cost of rechargeable household batteries— including AA, AAA, C, and D-sized— as well as their chargers, up to a maximum of $ 50 per household. These items are readily available from major retailers such as Officeworks, Woolworths, and Coles.
The rebates are designed to help offset the initial cost of reusable products and to encourage a move away from single-use items. While reusable alternatives may cost more upfront, they can save households over $ 1,000 per year in the long run, while also helping to reduce environmental impact.
Absorbent hygiene products such as nappies and sanitary items account for approximately 8 % of household rubbish in red-lidded bins. Meanwhile, discarded batteries continue to pose a fire hazard and threaten the safety of workers in the waste and resource recovery industry. Eligibility and How to Apply To apply for a rebate, applicants must prove they are residents of the Hawkesbury Local Government Area and provide valid receipts showing the date and place of purchase. Items must be purchased within three months of submitting a claim. Rechargeable Batteries You may claim 50 % of the cost of rechargeable household batteries( AA, AAA, C and D sizes) and compatible chargers, up to a maximum of $ 50 per household. Reusable Cloth Nappies You may claim 50 % of the cost of cloth nappies, swim nappies, reusable liners, wet bags, reusable wipes for nappies, and reusable nursing pads, up to a maximum of $ 100 per household. Reusable Sanitary Products You may claim 50 % of the cost of reusable sanitary pads, menstrual cups, period underwear, and wet bags, up to a maximum of $ 50 per household.
The rebate programme is set to run for 12 months but may conclude earlier if allocated funds are exhausted. If the trial proves successful, it may be extended beyond the initial 12-month period.
