What is a public notary ? A public notary can be best described as carrying out a similar function to a Justice of the Peace except a Public Notary witnesses international documents . However , there are some key differences –

( a ) To become a public notary a person must have completed a Notarial Practice Course , have been a lawyer for at least a period of 5 continuous years and must hold a current Australian Solicitor Practising Certificate .

( b ) A public notary can assist with a wide range of international legal documents and the process involved can vary . For example : a . A public notary can notarise a document before it is sent overseas ; b . After a document is notarised ,

the Department of Foreign Affairs may then authenticate a document before it is sent overseas ; and c . A document notarised by a Public Notary and authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs may then be sent to a country ’ s embassy or consulate to be finally certified .
