Windsor Gas Lamp Festival
As the chill of winter begins to settle over the historic town of Windsor , there ’ s a warmth that radiates through its brick streets and colonial architecture . It ’ s a warmth that harkens back to a bygone era , when gas lamps flickered in the night casting a romantic glow over the town ’ s bustling thoroughfares . And it ’ s this nostalgic charm that the inaugural Windsor Gas Lamp Festival aims to celebrate this year .
Over the long weekend from 7 - 10 June 2024 , Windsor will come alive with the enchanting glow of its restored gas lamps , marking the largest network of such lamps in Australia . With 25 of the original 26 lamp posts still standing tall , it ’ s a testament to Windsor ’ s rich heritage and enduring spirit .
Originally installed by the Australian Gas Light Company ( AGL ) during the building of the mall 40 years ago , the lamps aimed to replicate those from 100 years prior . These handcrafted lamps have been an integral part of Windsor ’ s landscape since 1884 .
The Windsor Gas Lamp Festival is a celebration of this heritage , offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the charm of yesteryear . From night markets and food stalls to a vintage car and tractor show , there ’ s something for everyone to enjoy .
The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the official ceremony on Saturday evening , kicking off with a grand parade through the town ’ s historic streets . Led by a town crier and the iconic ‘ 3
Gasketeers ’ the parade promises to be a spectacle like no other . Lantern-lit ghost tours , period costumes , and a lone piper weaving through the town ’ s exhibits further transport visitors back in time .
Nine bands and live entertainment will be in the rotunda , the air will be filled with music late into the night , plus a traditional horse and carriage ride .
As the sun sets and the gas lamps cast their warm glow over Windsor once more , it is a reminder of the town ’ s rich history and enduring spirit , and a testament to the community that keeps its heritage alive .
So mark your calendars and join us for a weekend of nostalgia , celebration , and camaraderie at the Windsor Gas Lamp Festival . Whether you ’ re a history enthusiast , a lover of vintage charm , or simply looking for a unique experience , you won ’ t want to miss this enchanting event .
And with parking available across the river in Macquarie Park , getting here is easier than ever . We look forward to welcoming you to Windsor , where the past comes to life in the flicker of a gas lamp .
The Windsor Gas Lamp Festival has been coordinated by local not-for-profit The Windsor Experience and has been sponsored by Guy Stuff , Lollies ’ n ’ Stuff & Delicious Desserts , Hawkesbury City Council & The ‘ Independent ’ Magazines .
