Just cause for Cawsey reunion by Greg Martin

Members of the 1999 Hawkesbury under 12 years representative cricket team bowled up to Windsor Bowling Club last month to celebrate a quarter of a century since its all-conquering feats that momentous year .
Most of the players were able to attend the reunion and those who couldn ’ t gave their old team-mates good excuses .
But Hell nor high water wasn ’ t going to prevent Canada-based Dave Turtle from celebrating with his old team mates .
It was a low-key affair at Windsor ’ s bowlo , with the team mates and members of their families getting in a few ends of barefoot bowls before adjourning and heading into the clubhouse for a long , enjoyable lunch .
That summer of ’ 99 was certainly a meritorious time for the Hawkesbury youngsters who won both of the state ’ s most prestigious titles .
The New Year opened auspiciously with victory over the red-hot favourites and perennial champions , Newcastle , in the final of the annual Lismore Under 12 Years Cricket Carnival .
The team reassembled in the autumn
The red-hot Summer of ’ 99 Hawkesbury Cawsey Shield Under 12 side dominated the best teams of their age group in the state . Twenty-five years later they celebrated their deeds with a long and convivial lunch in Windsor . to compete in the time-honoured Cawsey Shield Under 12 round-robin competition .
Twenty-four teams representing all Sydney Grade Cricket clubs as well as district teams from across the state contested the series and the last club standing were the boys from Hawkesbury .
In the final they again faced up to Newcastle , which for years emulated their string of successes at Lismore in the Cawsey Shield .
The final was played at South Maroota Cricket Ground and a big crowd rocked

up to witness the 50 overs-a-side match between two topflight teams .
Newcastle won the toss and elected to bat and batted out their allotted 50 overs against a handy bowling lineup which included prolific wicket-takers , mediumpace swing bowler , Matt Dyball , and quickie , Matty Day .
Newcastle managed to compile 9-125 , so the stage was set for an exciting finish .
However , the only excitement was in the Hawkesbury camp with openers , skipper , Lachlan Eldridge ( 61no ) and Dan Walshaw ( 60no ), dominating the Newcastle bowlers to reach the target with 12 overs to spare .
