The State Library of Victoria holds a large collection of landscape photographs taken by John Henry Harvey , a talented amateur photographer . Included in this collection are some unique scenes of the Hawkesbury .
Architect and amateur photographer Harvey was born in Melbourne in 1855 . As a young man , he began working in a drawing office in the agricultural and mining industry before starting work for the Public Works Department where he worked as an assistant draftsman and tracer . His interest in photography also started when he was a young man in his early twenties .
Harvey became an architect ’ s assistant joining the firm of Smith & Ebden in 1879 and several years later , moved to Sydney where he worked for a number of architects . It was while he was in Sydney that he met widow Henrietta Kinamond Coath , nee Fairbairn , his future wife . He moved back to Victoria where he gained permanent employment with the Public Works Department in 1882 as an assistant draftsman and was eventually promoted to assistant architect . The following year , he married Henrietta and they made their home in Victoria .
Working predominantly in Melbourne and Central Victoria his career spanned almost forty years and when he retired in 1920 , he was a Fellow of the RVIA , RAIA and RBIA . During his working career Harvey ’ s photography concentrated on architecture , including government buildings and bridges , but he was also enthusiastic about travel which he combined with his photography .
In 1888 , as a young man , Harvey was the first person to successfully photograph the Buchan Caves in Victoria ’ s East Gippsland .
Surviving his wife Henrietta , he died in
1938 , aged eighty three . Several months prior to his death , he returned from Europe where he had travelled extensively and was made a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in England . John ’ s large photographic collection was bequeathed to Henrietta ’ s daughter , Ada Mary Coath , who for many years was also his photography assistant .
It is the majority of this collection , comprising almost 3,000 images , which is now held by the State Library of Victoria . Accompanying this article are several of John Harvey ’ s photographs of the Hawkesbury .
