PulseFM – the heartbeat of the Hawkesbury
by Greg Martin
The pulse at PulseFM is beating along perfectly following the recent decision by the Australian Communications and Media Authority ( ACMA ) to allocate the radio station a long-term community radio broadcasting licence .
Much to the delight of management , presenters and Pulse FM ’ s horde of ardent listeners !
Last July , ACMA advertised Australiawide for applications for community radio stations to submit submissions outlying reasons for them be allocated long-term broadcast licences .
PulseFM manager Kathryn Gene and her team spent countless hours ensuring their submission would impress ACMA .
In making its decision to allocate the licence , ACMA considered the extent to which the proposed services would meet the needs of our community and the capacity of PulseFM to provide that service .
Kathryn and the PulseFM team members were up near the top of the queue when “ smarts ” were being divvied out , ensuring their detailed submission received the stamp of approval from ACMA .
For that , Pulse FM listeners who turned their dials ( do radios still have dials ?) to 89.9 MHz have their heartfelt thanks .
The first Australian commercial broadcasters , originally known as “ B ” class stations , were on the air as early as 1925 .
Many were sponsored by newspapers
( remember them ?), theatrical entrepreneurs , amateur radio enthusiasts and radio retailers .
By the early 1930s almost all Australians throughout the Wide , Brown Land were able to tune into a radio station .
Hawkesbury Radio began in 1978 with a test broadcast before gaining its full licence in 1982 - one of the first local community radio licences granted .
It originally broadcast on 89.7 MHz before moving up two notches to 89.9 MHz in December 1999 .
For many years the station broadcast out of a tiny , condemned building , which housed the studio and transmitter on Fitzgerald Street , Windsor . However , current headquarters are in unit 5 / 283-285 Windsor Street , Richmond ( Marigold Mall ).
PulseFM Radio operates courtesy of a five-team board , members and business folk from within our community . The board members are Richard Griffiths , Cathy Stevenson , Jo Dunstan , Colin Cliffton and Mike Denning .
The aim of the board and presenters is to produce a quality , well informed radio station 24 hours a day , seven days a week . And that aim is always spot on , hitting the bullseye with the excellence of its wide variety of programs .
That means no changing between radio stations !
Playing the music loved by the local community , PulseFM provides a broad range of programming . These include interviews , special presentations , genrebased music programs and networked
We ’ re the one ! Obviously delighted with the news that a permanent broadcast licence has been granted to PulseFM are the folk behind the radio station ’ s microphones . programs from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia .
The station has relationships with many community organisations and is involved regularly in community events , sporting events , outside broadcasts , and promotions .
The volunteer staff are all passionate and experienced on-air presenters – their combined radio experience exceeds 50 years – and each and every one of them are committed to serving the Hawkesbury . Yep , PulseFM is alive and kicking , and kicking for many years to come !
