Clr Sarah McMahon elected

Mayor of Hawkesbury City

Hawkesbury City Councillor Sarah McMahon was elected as the new Mayor of Hawkesbury City at last month ’ s council meeting , Tuesday 23 August 2022 . Councillor Barry Calvert will remain as Deputy Mayor .
Mayor McMahon said it is “ a privilege and an honour to be elected Mayor of Hawkesbury City ”.
“ I ’ d like to thank my fellow councillors for their trust and faith in me to do the job of looking after our beautiful LGA – a place I love ,” Mayor McMahon said .
Mayor McMahon pledged to be a strong advocate for the council to both state and federal governments , and to work closely with councillors and the community on a works program supporting tourism , employment and infrastructure upgrades .
“ As 12 leaders , we must be doing all we can to be loud and strong advocates for our community , to the higher levels of government , who have the financial capacity to deliver the social , economic and infrastructure benefits the Hawkesbury needs and deserves ,” Mayor McMahon said .
“ We must protect our rural amenity , but that does not mean nothing ever changes . We must be an ideas LGA . An innovative LGA . A connected LGA . An inclusive LGA . And one that wants to balance all of our key objectives as per our Community Strategic Plan .
“ We need vision . Long term goals and projects that also create income to reinvest into better services . We must continue to support our local small businesses and ensure they are valued and listened to when in need .
“ I will be seeking an update on the status of our road repairs and communicate in due course our schedule to get this done . I know this is an issue that is pressing to many , and I will do my best to see this through .”
Mayor McMahon also spoke about her desire for all 12 councillors to work collaboratively together , for the benefit of the entire community , which is especially important in these current times of recurring natural disasters .
Mayor McMahon ’ s election follows the resignation of Clr Patrick Conolly as Mayor earlier this month for personal reasons . Clr Conolly will continue in his role as councillor .
Mayor McMahon paid tribute to Clr Conolly , praising his leadership and his ongoing contribution to the Hawkesbury community .
Mayor McMahon will serve the remainder of the current two-year mayoral term , which will expire in January 2024 .

Flood relief concert a great success

The Hawkesbury Flood Relief Concert featured iconic Australian guitarist Kevin Borich and was supported by local talent , Jed Zarb , Mady Disbray , Matt Charnley and the James Brothers , was held at the Richmond Club at the end of last month .
The event organised by Pulse 89.9 FM Community Radio in the Hawkesbury raised $ 3489.00 for people affected by the recent floods . The cheque was handed over to Jo Dunstan , president of Richmond Rotary , at the studios of Pulse 89.9 FM in Magnolia Mall Richmond by Richard Griffiths chair , Cathy Stevenson public officer of Hawkesbury Community Media Network Association and station manager Kathryn Gene .
This was an event that organiser Richard Griffiths said , “ was a must for the people of the Hawkesbury to get out - dance , have fun and at the same time give to those in need in the area .” Station manager Kathryn approached Kevin Borich , who was more than happy to be a part of helping the Hawkesbury after the continual flooding ,
“ What has happened in the Hawkesbury has been devastating , I hope that my part can help the community ,” Kevin said , who was so taken back by the support the concert received .
Kathryn said , “ at PulseFM we act as a communication tool for the local community and cater to their needs . Recently the station has been asking questions on behalf of the Yarramundi ,
North Richmond and Colo Heights ’ communities regarding water meters or live traffic .
“ We certainly do not think that the communities receiving live traffic was all our doing , but we did talk about it on radio to government officials regarding the safety requirement for flood-stricken communities .
We asked Kathryn and Richard what was next , Kathryn said they were already onto the next community asset .
“ After attending a media release in Pitt Town , we realised the gravity of the lack of communication both for Pitt Town and areas such as McDonald Valley and Colo Valley . We have spoken to the Hawkesbury SES and are now working with them on the possibility of purchasing a Cells on Wheels ( COW ) to be used as needed by the community .”
Pulse 89.9 FM would like to thank the Richmond Club , Prismatic Group , Crown Plaza , Richmond Rotary , all the local talent , Kevin Borich and his band Chris Spanjol , Brendon Venner and Richard Griffiths and most importantly , the Hawkesbury community .
