A good handful of internationally acclaimed and award-winning scroll saw artists displayed their awe-inspiring skills at Hawkesbury Woodcraft Co-Op ’ s third annual Pyro , Carving and Scroll Sawing Weekend last month at their Wilberforce clubhouse .
And by pyro , I don ’ t mean there were pyromaniacs putting matches to anything which stood still and fire brigades converging regularly at the site !
Pyrography is the free-handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks , resulting by the application of a heated object such as a poker .
However , the main emphasis of the weekend was to highlight the skills of scroll sawyers and for visiting experts to impart their vast knowledge , not only to the co-op members but to other interested folk who attended the workshop .
A scroll saw is a small electric or pedaloperated saw used to cut intricate curves in wood , metal , or other materials .
The fineness of its blade allows it to cut more delicately than a power jigsaw , and more easily than a hand coping saw or fretsaw .
Scroll sawyers came from near and far to be part of what co-op chairman , Graham Shakespeare , described as an “ outstandingly successful weekend ”.
Among the visiting scroll saw masters were Ted Hawkins ( Kiama ), Robert Morley ( Melbourne ) and Wangaratta couple , Ashley and Francis Whitehead .

Hawkesbury Woodcraft also boasts amongst its members highly skilled sawyers – internationally renowned David Stanley , Ian West and Peter Hathaway . Club legend , 91-year-old Muriel Picton , OAM , is also a deft hand on the scroll saw !
Hawkesbury Woodcraft Co-Op was formed over 30 years ago and boasts 50 members whose ages range from 16 through to club matriarch , Madam Muriel .
Ian West took time out from his scrolling to walk me around the workshop and chat about the club .
“ No-one is too old or too young to join the club – they ’ ll be welcomed with open arms and every club member will do their utmost to ensure their time with us is an enjoyable learning experience .” Ian said .
“ Such is their interest in woodworking , a few of our members have not let a disability prevent them from joining .
“ There ’ s visually impaired Steve Gault who is always accompanied by his seeingeye dog , Cable .
“ Steve has pencil-vision but he doesn ’ t let that prevent him from pursuing his art , and a lovely young man with cerebral palsy has just joined us .”
The club , which boasts a state-of-theart workshop , kitchen , amenities , and an outside covered dining area , is always keen to attract new members .
