CELEBRATING 110 YEARS

1912 - 2022

Linking with

a proud history

Parramatta JRL ...

Windsor Wolves would like to thank all our valued sponsors & supporters who have supported this feature celebrating our 110 year Anniversary !

With the inclusion of Parramatta into the NSW first division in 1947 , Windsor moved from Western District Rugby League to Parramatta Junior League and again competed with varying success and dramas .
During the 1961 season the club lost all its points while leading the competition , due to playing unregistered players ( Joeys or ring-ins ).
All Sydney First Grade footy in those days were played on Saturdays and many of those top-line players illegally turned out for junior clubs on the Sundays .
Several Windsor officials including the secretary , Horrie Wayling , were suspended for life .
Another good story of interest that occurred was during a match against
Parramatta back when the Windsor side was paired with Riverstone playing in the Parramatta JRL .
Riverstone fielded the A Grade and Windsor , the A Reserve team , which on this day was playing Parramatta .
Parramatta was undefeated and favoured strongly in the betting ( which was BIG in those days ), but Windsor beat the hot favourites resulting in the Windsor players being hotly pursued to the dressing shed where they had to lock themselves inside to escape the Parramatta supporters who were out of pocket .
The Windsor players were only able to gain their freedom due to the intervention of Billy Teale of Riverstone , a still fit former professional boxing champion .

... and then with Penrith DJRL

Penrith Panthers entered the NSWRL First Division in 1967 , resulting in all three local clubs – Windsor , Richmond and Riverstone , joining the new Penrith DJRL .
Windsor achieved its first ever A Grade premiership in 1969 .
The team was coached by legendary Rod Payne and was captained by Windsor stalwart , tough-as-teak prop , Bob Monaghan , who led to the team to a 10-5 grand final win over Mt Druitt Ghosts at Penrith Park .
The history-making team that day was , Bob Monaghan , Bill Knobs , Keith Sunderland , Graham Hill , George Demattia , Kai George , Joe Power , Garry Medina , Gary Lee , Terry Glover , Col Ramm , Dennis Gavin , Bill Knobs , Dooley Main , Tony Twible , Gil France and Colin Venn .
Windsor reached the A Grade Grand Final again in 1973 and for the first time in 80 years of competition they were up against arch-rivals , Richmond , in the decider .
Richmond won the match 10-8 in one of the best games I , and all at the match , have ever witnessed .
Congratulations WINDSOR WOLVES on your 110 th Anniversary

To all of our wonderful volunteers , coaches , players and supporters we say a BIG thank you !

Without the people that are pivotal to this Club we would not have achieved such a milestone !
