Have you heard the expression “ life doesn ’ t have to be perfect to be wonderful ?” The last few years have proved challenging , but there are still many great opportunities for our community , and much to be grateful for in our lives .
Here , at
Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre and Community Aid Services Inc . ( RNC ), we believe that adversity can challenge our thinking and compel us to think outside the square . It may encourage us to do things differently and really consider how best to utilise limited resources for the best possible outcomes . In summary , adversity can also bring many silver linings . A Taste of Tallawong is a collaboration between DEICORP and RNC ; it offers a four-week program of food pop up and cultural activity every Friday night . Our launch was held Friday 27 May , and will run each Friday until 17 June 2022 . It promises to be a real feast for the senses .
Evidence tells us that the past few years with pandemics have had a significant impact on people ’ s wellbeing , particularly by limiting social connection . Our North West Precinct is growing rapidly , and with the
SHOP 12 RIVERSTONE MARKET TOWN numerous lockdowns people are desperately keen to reconnect with each other .
A Taste of Tallawong will offer opportunities for local business and cultural groups / performers to showcase their offerings , whilst importantly giving our community a chance to build connections locally . Come along and join us for fun and yummy Friday nights !
We are constantly reading articles about the pandemics ’ impact on older people and their physical and mental health . We see the pressure and disastrous outcomes on families and parents struggling to maintain a sense of ‘ normal , supported ’ family life in the midst of major upheavals .
Our children and young people are not exempt ; increasing numbers are struggling with poor mental health , challenging behaviours , social norms and increasing suicidal ideation .
Our community have been telling us the last few years have been so difficult , and people feel they have ‘ lost their way ’. We haven ’ t been able to return to a sense of ‘ normal ’, despite lockdowns easing . We hear from children and youth who struggle to find appropriate support services , because waiting lists are so long and there are very few local options for our community .
To respond to the growing challenges , particularly as our population grows rapidly , RNC have been offering a range of free community activities . These include training , physical activity programs , community events , and creative-based programs ( such as clay making and gardening ).
These are important strategies to help rebuild community connection . We are also offering a new education , training and employment pathway initiative , and will soon be launching a fundraising drive to support higher numbers of young people with this venture .
