The Driftway upgrades approved

Transport for NSW ( TfNSW ) is expected to start engaging contractors shortly for upgrades to The Driftway , following planning approval being granted for Stage 1 works of the New Richmond Bridge and traffic improvements project last week ( 27 April ).
Residents ’ comments , questions and TfNSW responses to the review of environmental factors ( REF ) have been released in a 74-page report . The REF included road upgrades , new roundabouts and increased flood resilience by raising the new realigned section at the eastern end of The Driftway .
Minor changes made to the proposal , that went on public exhibition in November and December last year , included stabilising and strengthened the existing pavement surface for a 40-year design life , instead of the original 20 years , along with better drainage levels and vehicle access to four homes and the waste management facility on the southern side of the road .
With planning approval granted , the detailed design phase is now underway .
Federal Minister for Communications , Urban Infrastructure , Cities and the Arts , Paul Fletcher , joined with NSW Minister for Metropolitan Roads , Natalie Ward , at The Driftway last week to officially announce the approval and go-ahead .
The ministers were joined by Hawkesbury MP Robyn Preston , Macquarie candidate Sarah Richards and Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh .
“ Today ’ s announcement marks an important step in the delivery of this upgrade , which is one part of a package of works being delivered

under the Hawkesbury River Third Crossing project for which the Commonwealth is providing $ 400 million ,” Minister Fletcher said .
The Stage 1 upgrade , being jointly funded by the Commonwealth and NSW governments , is designed to increase road safety , reduce delays and improve flood resilience as part of the total $ 500 million Third Crossing of the Hawkesbury River project .
NSW Metropolitan Roads Minister Natalie Ward welcomed the new project and said it would reduce crashes and cater for future growth in the region .
“ This upgrade will make all the difference for the thousands of motorists who use this road every day by improving road safety … and flood resilience by raising the new realigned section at the eastern end of The Driftway by over three metres ,” Minister Ward said .
Federal Liberal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh said the upgrade will allow the road
