It ’ s Mother ’ s Day on Sunday ( 8 May ) a time to formally show our appreciation and thanks for the work our mum ( or someone else ’ s mum ) has done , or continues to do , in contributing to the betterment of our lives .
The observance was first celebrated here in Australia in 1910 , according to the National Library of Australia . Gift giving became the norm from around 1927 when charitable items including soap , lollies , hairpins and scarves were donated at the Feminist Club in Leichhardt for lonely and elderly mothers who ’ d lost sons and husbands in WWII .
This special day was created to honour the best mother who ever lived – yours .
If you ’ re lucky enough to have your mother in your life , as I do , make sure you send her love and thanks on a day which recognises the importance of her role in the family , community and to you .
In case you didn ’ t happen to notice the stream of funding announcements , photo opportunities and regular visits to town by members of the Australian parliament , we have a federal election coming up on
HDI
Saturday , 21 May .
Hawkesbury is classified under the seat of Macquarie , which has been branded one of the most marginal , key seats in the nation , under two-party preferred voting . While it ’ s been dubbed as the ‘ round two clash ’ of Labor vs Liberal – sitting member Susan Templeman ( ALP ) vs Sarah Richards ( Lib ), we do have six other candidates vying for your vote .
In ballot paper order , all our candidates are : Tony Pettitt ( Pauline Hanson ’ s One Nation ); Susan Templeman ( Labor Party ); Nicole Evans ( United Australia Party ); James Jackson ( Liberal Democrat Party ); Greg Keightley ( Animal Justice Party ); Tony Hickey ( The Greens NSW ); Michelle Palmer ( Informed Medical Options Party ) and Sarah Richards ( Liberal ).
Will the seat of Macquarie be a repeat of the knife-edge result back in 2019 when it was won by Labor by just 371 votes ? If the last election is anything to go by , every vote really does matter , so make yours count this upcoming election .
