Aged care remains a priority for Labor

with Susan Templeman MP
Older Australians , like my dad Bob , helped build this country . They worked hard , paid their taxes and raised their families .
They rightly expected that the Federal Government would support them in their frailer years . That ’ s what they deserve , that ’ s what they ’ ve earned , after a life contributing to their communities and to Australia .
And the workers who do so much to care for older Australians – including the ones who care for my dad , also deserve to be supported .
Aged care is the sole responsibility of the Federal Government . And the Morrison Government has consistently failed these Australians .
After 21 expert reports , they knew older Australians were suffering in aged care but they didn ’ t fix the problem . As Treasurer , Scott Morrison actually cut billions in funding .
The Royal Commission found that the system was in crisis .
And throughout COVID-19 , the Morrison Government has botched everything in aged care from vaccine rollouts to infection control and even supplying enough personal protective equipment ( PPE ) for staff .
Sadly , the consequences of this incompetence have been deadly with thousands of older Australians dying in aged care during the pandemic .
After almost a decade of Liberal National government neglect , we now have a situation where homes are closing their doors and the ADF had to be called in . The Morrison Government can ’ t be trusted to fix
their broken system . Labor deeply believes that the elderly citizens who built this country deserve an aged care system that genuinely looks after them .
An Albanese Labor Government will invest in aged care and the issues that have been ignored by the Liberals and Nationals for almost a decade : 1 . Registered nurses on site 24 / 7 2 . More carers with more time to care 3 . A pay rise for aged care workers 4 . Better food for residents 5 . Real accountability in the system and a cap on Home Care fees Labor is determined to make sure our big investments in aged care fix the damaged reputation of the sector .
We will make aged care a place people

want to work , knowing that they will be respected and valued for the special work they do in caring for our frailest citizens .
Aged care is and always will be a priority for Labor . An Albanese Labor Government will fix the aged care system . You can find Labor ’ s full plan at www . alp . org . au / policies / aged-care .

FLOOD SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE
I urge storm and flood affected homeowners and renters in Hawkesbury , The Hills and Hornsby local government areas to seek assistance through the Back Home Grant .
This grant payment will help make impacted residents ’ homes safe and habitable again . There are one-off payments of $ 20,000 for owners-occupiers , $ 15,000 for landlords and $ 5,000 for renters available .
Further flood assistance is also available such as the Primary Producers Grant of up to $ 75,000 , Small Business Grant of up to $ 50,000 and the Rural Landholders Grant of
up to $ 25,000 . To apply and check whether you are eligible for any of these grants , visit the Service NSW website at https :// www . service . nsw . gov . au / floods or call 13 77 88 . STAGE 1 OF THE NEW RICHMOND BRIDGE PROJECT
Planning approval for The New Richmond Bridge project has been granted and stage 1 , upgrade of The Driftway , will commence this year with an estimated completion date in late 2024 .
Stage 1 will include road upgrades , new roundabouts and increased flood resilience by raising the new realigned section by almost 3 meters at the eastern end of The Driftway .
Our State and Federal Governments have joined forces to move ahead with
upgrades to The Driftway in Richmond .
As part of the $ 500 million Hawkesbury River Third Crossing project , the upgrades will assist Richmond locals travelling to and from work faster and more safely .
I welcome the Commonwealth Government ’ s $ 400 million commitment to this project which will generate more local jobs .
Submissions have been received and further analysis will continue for stage 2 but this won ’ t affect the commencement of stage 1 which has gained consensus of the Local , State and Federal Governments . FUNDING APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR WAR MEMORIALS
Do you know of a war memorial in Hawkesbury that could benefit from the
NSW Government ’ s Community War Memorials Fund ?
Communities can apply for the next round of grants to conserve and restore local war memorials .
Maintaining our local war memorials is important as they provide a focal point for local communities to come together to commemorate and honour local service men and women . They also help our younger generations understand the importance of remembering the sacrifice of our diggers and paying respect to our defence force personnel .
Submissions can now be made via the War Memorials fund at www . veterans . nsw . gov . au / grants until the closing date , Monday 25 July 2022 .
