Your daily stroll is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise , but did you know that just 30 minutes walking can do so much for you than just get you moving ?
Walking each day has a great number of health benefits and this gentle exercise can be done by anyone , anywhere , which makes it so easy to work into your day . Going on a walk is less damaging to your body than running , as it is a low impact exercise putting less stress on your joints .
It also improves your circulation , tones muscle and helps your bone density , which keeps osteoporosis at bay . As well as keeping you fit , walking has been shown to lower the risk of diabetes , heart disease and stroke along with some cancers .
Its health benefits expand to your mental health as well . It can improve your mood by releasing endorphins and can be a factor in lessening depression . It improves your sleep quality and has been shown in studies to slow down your mental decline as you get older , actually lowering the risk of Alzheimer ’ s .
If you are time poor , you don ’ t even have to do it all at once , it can be split up into smaller walks in your day , however , you get the maximum benefit doing the full 30 minutes in one go . To help with motivation , walking is a terrific way to catch up with friends , and for those of us who might struggle to do their 30 minutes each day , scheduling some walks with people helps to keep you accountable while clocking up the kilometres .
If you prefer to walk on your own , a podcast is a good way to learn

something or be entertained on your route , or you could even get some reading in by downloading an audio book to listen to on your way ( and in case you didn ’ t know , our local libraries offer audio books free as part of their fabulous services ).
To keep things fresh and explore more of our beautiful communities , make sure to mix up the route you take from time to time , so you are including hills and different things to see . You can even take the car or public transport to a different area and use your walks as a reason to explore !
