$ 5m wellbeing hub a win for vets Federal Liberal and Labor both unveil plans for a veterans ’ wellbeing centre in our electorate

by Maryann Jenkins
A $ 5 million veterans ’ wellbeing and support hub will be built within our electorate regardless of which major political party wins the May federal election ; welcome news for the 2000-plus veterans and their families who need support .
Within days of each other , both Labor and the Liberal Coalition each announced $ 5 million to establish a vets ’ wellbeing centre – Labor ( 8 April ) and Liberal ( 13 April .)
Shadow Minister for Veterans ’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Shayne Neumann made the Albanese Labor Government ’ s announcement with Macquarie MP Susan Templeman , Windsor RSL sub-branch wellbeing advocate Bonnie Rieusset and RSL NSW President Ray James at Richmond Club .
“ Labor pushed for a Royal Commission into veteran suicide and mental health issues and dragged the Morrison Government into that area ,” Mr Neumann said .
“ Sadly , we have seen too many veterans take their own lives . That ’ s why we are making this commitment … to ensure this one-stop shop can provide support for veterans ’ wellbeing with their transition from military to civilian life .
“ They will be able to access wraparound services locally , including mental health services and support for both young families and young veterans .”
Ms Templeman said local veterans would have substantial input into the development and location of the centre .
“ I know every veteran will have their own thoughts on this too , and , if we win the election , I will be seeking input from

“ I ’ ve stood beside so many in our community , like the RSL Sub-branches and the Blue Mountains Vietnam Veterans , who have been advocating long and hard for more services and more support for veterans . It ’ s clear we need to do better by the people who have served our nation .”
Foreign Affairs Minister and Senator for Western Sydney Marise Payne released the Liberal ’ s announcement , with Minister for Immigration , Citizenship , Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs , Alex Hawke , and Federal Candidate for Macquarie Sarah Richards meeting with veterans at the Scheyville site to deliver the news .
Senator Payne said the Hawkesbury site will join a network of six other government-established centres to provide veterans and their families with greater access to wellbeing services .
“ These centres are delivered at the grassroots level to help ensure that veterans and their families are able to receive services from local people who know the local environment and service availability ,” Senator Payne said .
“ The daughter of a veteran , Sarah Richards has advocated strongly to bring this service into Macquarie because she knows the positive difference this service will make .”
Ms Richards , who has lived on multiple RAAF bases , feels Scheyville was the “ perfect location ” to establish such a centre .
“ Be it RAAF , Army or Navy , we owe a great debt to our
men and women in uniform , which is why I am so pleased to be here today for the announcement … right here in the Hawkesbury .”
