Q & A WITH CANDIDATES : 2022 AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL ELECTION

Q & A WITH CANDIDATES : 2022 AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL ELECTION

The 2022 Australian federal election will be held on 21 May 2022 to elect members of the 47th Parliament of Australia . We contacted all candidates listed up until 26 April for Macquarie and asked them to be involved in a Q & A on the things that most effect our electorate . The candidates on these pages agreed to be involved and here are their answers to our questions .

Sarah Richards - Liberal Party

Hawkesbury needs a flood-free river crossing . Will your party support an ‘ eastwest ’ flood-free crossing / evacuation route ( similar to the elevated Hawkesbury Valley Way flood evac route ) so major towns ‘ west ’ like North Richmond / Grose Wold / Yarramundi , as well as Wilberforce / Pitt Town are not repeatedly cut-off ?
I ’ m proud to have fought for our community to secure $ 500 million in funding for the Hawkesbury River Third Crossing , which will cut commute times and help address the Richmond-North Richmond bottleneck .
In my lifetime , this is the largest investment the Hawkesbury has ever had to address our infrastructure needs . While planning is still ongoing , Transport for New South Wales have proposed that the Third Crossing be built six metres higher than the existing North Richmond Bridge .
The Third Crossing needs to be considered in conjunction with the proposed Grose River Bridge , which is currently being considered by Hawkesbury City Council . It is proposed that this bridge be built at a ‘ 1-in-100 ’ level . In addition to the Third Crossing , both the state and federal government are jointly funding a program to identify 100 infrastructure improvements to the Hawkesbury-Nepean
Valley flood evacuation network .
What I certainly don ’ t want to see is a repeat of what our had to endure with the Windsor Bridge . Macquarie is the most marginal seat in the State . What can your party deliver for the electorate that the other party can ’ t deliver ?
Our community knows that when I make a promise , I deliver . Over the past three years alone , I ’ ve successfully advocated for $ 500 million for the Hawkesbury River Third Crossing , $ 4.4 million for headspace Hawkesbury , and $ 5 million for a Veterans Wellbeing Centre in Scheyville . These aren ’ t election commitments ; they ’ re line items in the Budget which can only be delivered .
Ultimately , only the Morrison Government can ensure a strong economy and a stronger future . The pandemic has been very tough for our country . However , on almost every measure – economic growth , jobs growth , debt levels , fatality rates or vaccine rates – Australia ’ s recovery is leading the world . Treasury predicted unemployment could reach 15 %. In February , it fell to just 4 %.
Our country still faces many challenges and there is much more to be done , so we
must stick to the plan . NBN and telecommunications are still unreliable in the Hawkesbury with old , unstable infrastructure . Whole sections of towns still continue to “ go down ” regularly for weeks , particularly during inclement weather in greater Kurrajong , Bilpin and north up through the Putty Road . Can this really be fixed or is it a pipe dream that no amount of investment can rectify ?
I ’ m pleased that record funding has been invested locally to boost mobile coverage in the Hawkesbury so locals can connect with loved ones and work from home securely . The Morrison Government has funded 11 mobile sites in the Hawkesbury , including three separate base stations in Kurrajong , Bilpin and Putty . Recently , we ’ ve also delivered funding for two new Optus and TPG sites at Boundary Road , Oakville . When Labor was last in office , they didn ’ t deliver a single mobile base station .
Will you work with the government of the day or just oppose everything for the political sake of it ?
My commitment is to fight hard for my community regardless of which party forms the government .
How will your party address funding for resources , equipment , mitigation and recruitment for emergency service agencies , given the electorate ’ s high bushfire and flood prone status ?
Over the past decade more than $ 12 billion has been provided to the
states and territories through the joint Commonwealth-State / Territory Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements ( DRFA ) to restore vital community assets , support longer term recovery and to help reduce the social , economic , physical and personal impacts of future disasters .
In addition to DRFA , $ 2.5 billion has been allocated for supporting communities , including the Hawkesbury , devastated by the Black Summer Bushfires .
We ’ re continuing to see this pipeline of funding hit the ground in the Hawkesbury . Only last week , I attended the launch event for the new bushfire staging ground at Kurrajong Heights .
What ’ s happening with the sustained backlog of veteran ’ s affairs compensation / pension claims ?
As the daughter of a veteran , I will always stand up for our Veterans . It is why I am so proud to have fought for the $ 5 million committed to build a Veterans Wellbeing Centre at Scheyville .
While there is a backlog of veteran claims that need to be addressed , I am pleased that the Morrison government spends around 1 / 3 of its defence budget on looking after our veterans ; the highest amount of money spent on veterans anywhere in the world .
I have met with many veterans over the years , each with complex needs . I firmly believe that it is the duty of all governments to look after our servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom .

Nicole Evans - United Australia Party

Hawkesbury needs a flood-free river crossing . Will your party support an ‘ east-west ’ flood-free crossing / evacuation route ( similar to the elevated Hawkesbury Valley Way flood evac route ) so major towns ‘ west ’ like North Richmond / Grose Wold / Yarramundi , as well as Wilberforce / Pitt Town are not repeatedly cut-off ?
Absolutely ! I live west of the river and have been affected by the bridge closures , so I am keen to get a flood-free river crossing happening ASAP ! With $ 500 million of federal funding , this is a priority for the people in the Hawkesbury .
Macquarie is the most marginal seat in the State . What can your party deliver for the electorate that the other party can ’ t deliver ?
The UAP is offering many policies that affect all Australians . We ’ re the only party with a plan to pay off the $ 1 trillion of national debt by introducing
a 15 per cent export licence on our iron ore . We will help save homes by capping mortgages at 3 per cent for 5 years , so that you can continue to pay your mortgage at affordable rates . We plan to make higher education free and remove all the mandates so that Australians can get back to work and bring an end to lockdowns that don ’ t work . We will invest $ 1 trillion of Australian superannuation in Australia . The UAP will also process Australian minerals at home , creating jobs and increasing the value of our exports at sale .
This is something else that I am constantly affected by and I will make it my duty to ensure that the people of Macquarie have access to reliable communications .
Will you work with the government of the day or just oppose everything for the political sake of it ?
The UAP aims to BE the government . I won ’ t oppose things for the sake of it , no . I will act in the best interests of the people of the electorate though .
How will your party address funding for resources , equipment , mitigation and recruitment for emergency service agencies , given the electorate ’ s high bushfire and flood prone status ?
The UAP ’ s policies , including the
export licence on iron ore , will be used exclusively to pay off our national debt , clearing up funding which would otherwise have gone towards it . This means extra money to invest in better resources and infrastructure , without the bureaucracy and red tape . There ’ s a job to do and I will get it done , with the support of the party .
What ’ s happening with the sustained backlog of veteran ’ s affairs compensation / pension claims ?
This is another issue that I think should be prioritised and will ensure that there are sufficient resources to provide our veterans with the very best in financial , physical and mental support .
MACQUARIE is considered one of the most marginal seats in the country and is a key seat electorate for this election .
Spanning 4374 square kilometres , Macquarie covers an area from the Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers in the east , the city councils of Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury border in the west . The Wollemi and Yengo National Parks form the northern border and the Coxs River , Lake Burragorang and Warragamba River form the southern border .
Suburbs and towns include : Bilpin , Blackheath , Cattai , Central Macdonald , Colo , Colo Heights , Faulconbridge , Glenbrook , Glossodia , Grose Vale , Katoomba , Kurrajong , Lower Portland ( part ), McGraths Hill , Mellong , Mogo Creek , Mount Victoria , Mount Wilson , North Richmond , Richmond , Sackville ( part ), St . Albans , Windsor and Wisemans Ferry ( part ).
