HOME & GARDEN

Autumn in the garden

A REWARDING CAREER CLOSE TO HOME

Autumn is upon us , with the days getting shorter and the sun having lost much of its bite .
The past weeks have been extremely wet along the eastern seaboard , so much so that many areas are recovering from oversaturation and flooding from the rain bomb events .
If you ’ re still lucky enough to have a garden on high ground in the Hawkesbury that wasn ’ t washed away , you may have been trying to clean it up during the few dry days we ’ ve been blessed to have .
Traditional autumn garden clean-up is pruning your hedges , shrubs and climbers , removing dead head flowers and cutting back flowering stems ready for their next blooming cycle .
Applying mulch to garden beds takes advantage of winter rainfall and ensures surface roots are protected during winter . However , if you ’ re still waiting for your property to dry out , you should hold off on this a little .
Mr Fothergill ’ s Seeds recommends vegetables to plant now are peas , parsnips , carrots , onions , broccoli , cabbage , kale and spinach . Many herbs also enjoy the cooler conditions so it ’ s a great time to plant parsley , chives , mint , oregano and thyme .
Take the time to plant some sweet peas before Anzac Day as they like rich
soil and full sun , and need some type of support such as trellis or a fence .
Also plant winter and spring flowering seeds now such as alyssum , calendula , cosmos , foxglove , nemesia , snapdragon , poppies and pansies .
Temperatures are getting cool enough to plant heat sensitive bulbs such as hyacinths and tulips . Some produce bulbs are also in season now , including most potatoes , garlic and shallots , so plant them now for a late winter harvest .
